Possible reasons for interference (background noise/echo )

Interruption and bad sound quality
VoIP requires at least 80Kbit/s for up and downstream for your internet bandwidth connection. Therefore, if possible please avoid making telephone calls whilst downloading large amounts of data. (e.g. downloads, emails with attachments, updates etc.) This throttles your internet connection and considerably decreases the sound quality.

Loud, short interfering noises can be a symptom of overload.

  • Check your microphone settings and if necessary, reduce the volume and/or adjust the volume control.
  • Select a codec with an audio compression which takes up  a smaller frequency range, e.g. Codec  G.729.

Heavy interference on the line

If your voice is accompanied by heavy interference, please check your microphone settings by doing the following:

Windows Vista: Start -> Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound.

Windows XP: Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices

Mac: Select System Preferences from the dock -> Sound -> Input

Echo during the call

If experience a continual echo during a call, try the following to remove it:

Using headsets with a soundcard.
The ideal solution is the use of a USB headset. Sometimes microphones cause feedback in certain headsets. For some routers , pc, and/or softphone setups "Reverse UDP Mapping Rules" causes the error because the sound is only transferred in one direction. In this case, please implement the following adjustments in the settings:

  • Click the Menu (Symbol is on the right next to Clear) - Advanced Settings - RTP Settings - Obey Reverse UDP Mapping: No
  • In some cases, the " send internal IP: NEVER/offstage " setting can already solve this problem.

Alternatively, you can use the GSM codec. There are many different settings of various firewalls and routers which make it difficult to test and to publish all potential problems. Therefore, please understand that sipgate cannot provide support in this case.
